TAPAS Cultural Foundation nurtures the living arts of India — through classical dance, music, dharmic education, and a deep reverence for our civilisational heritage.
TAPAS Cultural Foundation was founded in 2006 by Smt. Mahalakshmi Ashwin and Shri. Ashwin Kumar Iyer with a simple, wishful thought — to contribute, in however small a measure possible, to the cultural continuity of Bharatavarsha.
Rooted deeply in Bhakthi, Dharma, and classical aesthetics, TAPAS has evolved into a multidimensional cultural institution — creating spaces where art, spirituality, and scholarship converge.
Since 2006, TAPAS has built six interconnected pillars — each rooted in Bhakthi, Dharma, and the Guru–Shishya Parampara
Classical Bharatanatyam training for 1,000+ sishyas across four locations in Chennai — in the Kalakshetra tradition, where arts are understood as sadhana.

A profound theatrical meditation on the spiritual journey of Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi — tracing not the events of his life, but the inner transformation, silence, and self-realisation that defined it. Marked by contemplative pacing and minimalism, Maharshi stands as TAPAS' most ambitious artistic achievement.

Voices from our Tapas community
Tapas Academy has transformed my understanding of Bharatanatyam. The attention to detail and dedication of the instructors is unparalleled. I've grown not just as a dancer, but as an artist.
The Gurukulam workshop was an intensive and enriching experience. Smt. Mahalakshmi Ashwin's guidance helped me connect deeply with the tradition and find my own artistic voice.
As a parent, I'm impressed by the holistic approach to dance education at Tapas. My daughter has developed discipline, confidence, and a deep appreciation for our cultural heritage.
