A multidimensional cultural institution rooted in Bhakthi, Dharma, and the classical aesthetics of Bharatavarsha
TAPAS Cultural Foundation was founded in 2006 by Smt. Mahalakshmi Ashwin and Shri. Ashwin Kumar Iyer with a simple, wishful thought — to contribute, in however small a measure possible, to the cultural continuity of Bharatavarsha. Much like the squirrel that carried pebbles to aid the building of Sri Rama's bridge, TAPAS has, over the years, added its own modest stones in service of Bharatiya Sanskriti, guided by humility, devotion, and a quiet sense of responsibility.
Rooted deeply in Bhakthi, Dharma, and classical aesthetics, TAPAS Cultural Foundation has evolved into a multidimensional cultural institution. The Foundation regularly organises music and dance festivals, lecture series, dharmic discourses, Vedic rituals, and cultural dialogues — creating spaces where art, spirituality, and scholarship converge.
Every initiative of TAPAS reflects the conviction that Indian classical arts are living expressions of a civilisational ethos — not merely performative disciplines.
The principles that guide everything we do
To contribute meaningfully to the cultural continuity of Bharatavarsha — through art, education, scholarship, and devotion.
To create, sustain, and nurture platforms where classical arts, dharmic thought, and Bharatiya heritage are practised, celebrated, and passed on to future generations.
Devotion as the animating spirit of all artistic practice.
The ethical and philosophical framework within which art is created and received.
The sacred lineage of teacher and student as the primary vehicle of cultural transmission.

Smt. Mahalakshmi Ashwin – Visionary, Scholar, and Master Guru
Artistic Director, Tapas Cultural Foundation
Smt. Mahalakshmi Ashwin began learning Bharatanatyam at the age of five, initiated into the art by Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale. A postgraduate alumna of the Kalakshetra Foundation, she was trained under her aunt Smt. Krishnaveni Lakshmanan, Smt. Ambica Buch, and Shri Janardhanan. She is also a trained Carnatic vocalist, having studied under Smt. Balasaraswathi at Kalakshetra.
As a choreographer, she is known for her innovation in classical dance dramas — presenting a balanced combination of Natyam, Sangeetham, and Roopakam, rooted in what she calls the 'Divine Principles of Natyam.' She is the curator of the annual TAPAS Natyotsava.
Under her leadership, TAPAS Cultural Foundation has grown into a multidimensional cultural institution, training more than 1,000 sishyas — many of whom have gone on to present their Arangetrams and carry the Kalakshetra tradition forward.
The Guru Parampara (lineage of masters) forms the living spine of Bharatanatyam. Smt. Mahalakshmi Ashwin's training descends through an unbroken chain of revered masters at the Kalakshetra Foundation:
Began learning Bharatanatyam at the age of five, initiated into the art by Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale, founder of the Kalakshetra Foundation.
Trained under her aunt Smt. Krishnaveni Lakshmanan, Smt. Ambica Buch, and Shri Janardhanan — all at the Kalakshetra Foundation.
Trained Carnatic vocalist, having studied under Smt. Balasaraswathi at Kalakshetra.
Carrying the lineage forward — training students at Tapas Academy, performing, choreographing, and curating the annual TAPAS Natyotsava.
Smt. Mahalakshmi Ashwin began her formal training in Bharatanatyam at a young age, demonstrating exceptional aptitude and devotion from the outset. Her Arangetram marked the beginning of an illustrious performing career that would span decades.
She has performed at prestigious venues and festivals across India, winning acclaim for the depth of her abhinaya and the precision of her nritta. Her choreographic works — thematic productions drawing on mythology, philosophy, and contemporary themes — have earned her a distinctive artistic voice.
The founding of Tapas Cultural Foundation marked a new chapter — channelling her artistic experience into institution-building, creating a legacy that would outlast any single performance.
